Boot Up & Power Management
From an off state, a Clarius Ultrasound Scanner may take up to 30 seconds to boot up, make the wireless connection, and start to image.
Once imaging, the scanner goes through the following default power management states to help reduce battery consumption and temperature:
- After 3 seconds of no patient contact, frame rate is reduced
- The scanner will increase frame rate once patient contact is made or if freeze is manually toggled
- After 30 seconds of reduced frame rate, the scanner will freeze
- After 15 minutes in a frozen state, the scanner shuts down
These power management states can be altered within the Clarius App settings.
Typical tested use cases for Clarius Scanners include 5 minutes of continuous scanning, followed by 10 minutes in a frozen state. If the scanner becomes too warm, it will send a notification to the App and shut down in 30 seconds. The scanner model, selected application, and imaging mode, all affect the power consumption in different ways, therefore not every use case is exactly the same.
As use cases may vary dramatically, the scanners are designed with flexible options and parameters to operate in many different scenarios and power states. When scanning for more than 15 consecutive minutes, it is recommended to use the fan attachment to ensure the temperature threshold is not reached.
Scanner Notifications
The Clarius Ultrasound Scanner hardware has no display for state changes or error messages, instead it presents visual and audible notifications through a multi-colored LED and integrated speaker.
Status LED
The below list defines the Clarius Scanner status lights:
Color | Display | Meaning |
Blue | Flashing | Scanner is booting up. |
Blue | Solid | Scanner is ready for a Wi-Fi connection or has a connection and is not imaging. |
Green | Solid | Scanner is imaging. |
Orange | Flashing | Battery is low. |
Orange | Solid | Unable to boot or software error. |
Red | Flashing | Battery is critically low. |
Red | Solid | Hardware error. |
Purple | Flashing | Firmware is updating. |
Audible Notifications
The below list defines the audible indicators the Clarius Scanner emits:
Sounds | Meaning |
2 quick beeps upon powering | Scanner components are ready |
3 quick beeps upon powering | Bluetooth is ready |
2 tone-increasing pitches | Power on |
2 tone-decreasing pitches | Power off |
2 tone-decreasing pitches (lower frequency) | Deep sleep (HD3 only) |
1 beep every few seconds | Battery is critically low |
Ringing | Find my scanner function engaged |
Factory Reset
To perform a factory reset:
- Ensure you are connected to the scanner within the Clarius App
- Enter the Status menu within the App
- Press Factory Reset and confirm
The scanner will reboot after a factory reset and will be connected automatically.
Performing a factory reset will do the following:
- Reset saved router/WLAN configurations
- This may be required if you want to remove known networks from the scanner or if a router password has changed
- Reset the scanner's Wi-Fi direct password and default channel.
- This may be required if Wi-Fi signal cannot be seen on the mobile device
- Reset the stored system time.
- This may be required if the mobile device time was accidentally set to a future date, a scanner was connected to, and then the date changed back to the correct time
- Reset the stored scanner settings to default
- These will automatically be reprogrammed again when the App next communicates with the scanner
HD3 Deep Sleep
As the Clarius HD3 does not have a removable battery, it may be desirable to completely cut the power to system circuitry. This can be accomplished when the scanner is in an off state (no LED) by holding the power button for an additional 3 seconds. Once successfully performed, 2 audible beeps can be heard, as described above. In some cases, if the firmware is not responding, and the beeps are not heard, pressing the power button for 10 seconds will engage a kill switch to force the system into a deep sleep.
In Deep Sleep mode, Bluetooth is turned off, and the scanner will not be seen within the Clarius App. To turn on once again, simply press the power button and the device will start it's initialization cycle.
Scanner Recovery
In rare cases, certain flash memory components on the device may become corrupted. These are typically detected and repaired automatically in the background, but it may be required to manually recover the scanner. The symptom can typically be traced to one the following scenarios:
- After a firmware update, a reboot yields a solid red LED or constant reboot
- Booting the scanner flashes the blue LED for 30 seconds and then goes to solid orange
To recover the scanner:
- Ensure that either the battery is removed, or in the case of HD3, that it is in the Deep Sleep mode as described above
- Insert the battery while holding both scanner buttons, or in the case of HD3, hold the up button and then press the power button
- Ensure to hold the buttons until a solid purple LED is displayed, the scanner will then start the typical boot cycle and may finally flash the LED purple for a few seconds
- The entire process may take up to 60 seconds
